Commercial aviation in China currently deploys thousands of airplanes and moves millions of people each year. Maintaining the fleet in China requires support and services from millions of people at hangars, airports, and other facilities.
This large and dynamic industry in China currently requires billions of dollars to maintain a healthy — and growing — aviation ecosystem.
The current state of aviation in China
Today, more than 10.2 million jobs are supported by the aviation industry in China, with commercial airplane fleets transporting more than 741 million passengers each year, generating an economic impact of approximately 253.6 billion USD, according to the International Air Transport Association (IATA).
China commercial airplane fleet growth forecasts
Boeing forecasts that the China commercial airplane fleet is expected to more than double in the next two decades ahead, progressing to a projected fleet size of approximately 9,755 in 2044.
Aviation aftermarket services demand in China
In parallel with this rapid fleet growth, the China region will demand 825 billion USD in aviation aftermarket products and services over the next two decades, according to the 2025 Boeing Commercial Market Outlook and Services Market Outlook.
Aviation workforce requirements in China
Thousands of additional aviation industry personnel will also be required in China to keep pace with the region’s rapid fleet growth.
The Boeing Pilot & Technician Outlook for 2025 has projected that China will need approximately 426,000 new aviation personnel through 2044. This includes:
- 124,000 new pilots
- 131,000 new maintenance technicians
- 171,000 new cabin crew professionals
Aviation training organizations, airlines, and MRO (Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul) services will need to support and invest in a variety of initial and continuous training programs for pilots and maintenance technicians. This will include generating opportunities for apprenticeships and certifications for maintenance technicians and improving flight simulators and other training infrastructure resources for pilots.
For commercial airplane cabin crews, airlines will continue to focus on safety, quality, and ensuring regulatory compliance for aviation training requirements.
