Why choose Boeing for Landing Gear Overhaul and Optimization?
Expert engineering and analysis
Boeing possesses unparalleled engineering designs, expertise and in-depth knowledge of our landing gear systems. Our team is equipped to analyze your specific needs and provide tailored recommendations for landing gear overhaul intervals and maintenance practices, ensuring optimal performance and safety for your fleet.
Global benchmarking and support
The Boeing Landing Gear Design Center (LGDC) has access to a vast worldwide fleet, allowing us to leverage benchmarking data for informed LGO recommendations. As the design center that designs, helps certify, addresses AOGs, and supports continued operational safety related to all Boeing landing gear, we are uniquely qualified to enhance the reliability and efficiency of your landing gear operations.
Benefits of the Landing Gear Overhaul and Optimization
Increased revenue days
Maximize the time your aircraft spends in service, generating more revenue and improving fleet utilization.
Cost deferral
Postpone expensive repairs, allowing for better financial planning and resource allocation.
Capital asset management
Delay the acquisition of additional capital assets.
Scheduling flexibility
Align overhauls with 12-year heavy check schedules, minimizing the need for separate maintenance events and improving aircraft availability.
Reduced overhauls
Decrease the number of overhauls required over the aircraft's life, leading to long-term cost savings.
Reduced maintenance costs
Lower the overall maintenance costs by improving the overhaul process and reducing the frequency of overhauls.
Landing Gear Overhaul and Optimization offerings
Optimization Justification Report (OJR)
Describes the data used for review, analysis processes and subsequent recommendations of the main and nose Landing Gear Overhaul intervals.
Airline/MRO Meeting
Boeing meets with the airline and MRO before landing gear induction. This meeting will helps collect data from the airline and MRO.
Regulatory Approval Support
Provides the airline with data and recommendations required to obtain approval for overhaul escalation, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.
Frequently asked questions
What is the value of purchasing a Landing Gear Overhaul Optimization program from Boeing?
Boeing’s Landing Gear Optimization (LGO) service provides the analysis of dimension and operational data, targeting an overhaul escalation from 10 to 12 years (the optimization is just for the calendar parameter, and the FC parameter will not be optimized). Overhaul escalation provides increased value by deferring the cost of landing gear overhaul, increasing revenue days, aligning with scheduled maintenance, and increasing scheduling flexibility.
What is the regulatory guidance related to LGO development?
An optimized scheduled maintenance program achieves the desired objectives and standards set by the air carrier, required by its OpSpecs and in accordance with FAA AC 120–16 and FAA AC 120–17. AC 120–16 provides airlines guidance to establish a Continuing Analysis and Surveillance (CASS) system, noting that regulations (§§ 121.373 and 135.431) require the establishment and maintenance of a system for the CASS of the performance and effectiveness of your maintenance program.
What data is needed?
Boeing Gear Template filled out by MRO to capture the as-received condition (three shipsets). The three representative shipset requirement is Boeing’s minimum recommended sample size, and the required number of shipsets is subject to the operator and their regulator.
Photos of the "as is" condition—previous to disassembly and at stages prior to damage removal.
- Dimension data (three shipsets – representative of the fleet)
- Corrosion findings, including location and severity
- Damage/wear findings
- Root cause of damage/wear (if known)
Operational data:
- Airplane owner/operator
- Airplane Line Number/Registry
- Region of Operation
- Total Airplane Flight Cycles and Flight Hours
- Flight Cycles, Flight Hours, and Days since previous Overhaul
- Lubrication Interval
- Overhaul Facility performing the data gathering
- Hard landings (for specific assessed LDG only)
- Grease type(s)
Can you use previous overhaul data?
No, the analysis by the Boeing Landing Gear Design Center requires detailed dimensional data and photos that are not part of a normal tear-down.
How long does it take to develop a Landing Gear Overhaul Optimization program for an operator?
The development of LGO typically takes 4 to 6 months after all of the data has been collected, and that does not account for any backlog of other customers.
What is the process for submitting the required data?
The process for submitting the required data involves filling out the Boeing Gear Template and providing detailed photos and dimension data. Boeing will coordinate with the airline and MRO to ensure all necessary data is collected and reviewed efficiently.
