Faster field test and repair for Apache with NGATS

On-site Apache repairs saves costs boost readiness
Boeing Global Services has upgraded its Next Generation Automatic Test System (NGATS) capabilities to include the first aviation test program set (TPS). The new NGATS Pathfinder TPS eliminates false readings for Apache Aircraft Interface Units (AIUs), reducing aircraft downtime and boosting mission readiness.
To date, the Pathfinder unit, located at Fort Rucker in Alabama, has tested 55 AIUs and enabled 28 to return to full operations with no required repair saving over $900,000 in nearly 7 months.
Overview
NGATS is a mobile, modular, general-purpose test platform originally developed for ground systems. It replaces legacy single-purpose devices like the Direct Support Electrical Systems Test Set known as DSESTS, a line replaceable unit test system for Army vehicles.
The U.S. Army received the 100th NGATS unit in 2023 and reported a $22 million decrease in monthly costs that year because of the improved fault-detection testing.
“NGATS with Boeing’s new aviation TPS puts repair capability where it’s needed most — at the point of need,” said Tammie Lalla, NGATS program manager. “That means fewer shipments to depot, faster returns to service and measurable cost savings for both ground and aviation Army customers.”
Key benefits
Sustainment
NGATS currently supports Army depot operations for platforms including Paladin, CROWS and Stryker at Tobyhanna and Letterkenny in Pennsylvania and Anniston in Alabama. The system is also in use in Poland.
2026 and beyond
Boeing is expanding TPS development to include more aviation platforms, unmanned aircraft and watercraft. A multifunction display test for the Chinook and Black Hawk is expected in 2026.
