Smart EFB technology debuts in Jeppesen FliteDeck Pro with release of Version 4.4

FliteDeck Pro, the mobile navigation application used by more than 80% of commercial pilots around the globe, just released version 4.4 earlier this June. The fleet agnostic app for tablet devices provides pilots with all the aeronautical maps, charts, manuals and documents needed for paperless flying.

This updated release, FliteDeck Pro 4.4, saw the debut of a groundbreaking new capability on the mobile application called Smart Airport Maps. This capability enables pilots to view contextual airport information unique to their aircraft type, weather conditions and even operation-specific preferences on over 1,000 dynamic airport charts. The fleet agnostic app for tablet devices provides pilots with all the aeronautical maps, charts, manuals and documents needed for paperless flying.

Contextual data depiction means a pilot taxiing a B777 in times of fog sees a dynamic map with information specific to low visibility conditions. They even see wingspan restrictions affecting taxiways unique to the B777. Once the fog is gone, a B737 or A320 pilot at the same airport will see different information despite using the same application and map. Smart EFB technology makes all of this possible.

Independent human factors research conducted at the Technical University of Wildau in Berlin, Germany concluded that use of the new Smart Airport Map capability significantly increased pilot situational awareness and shortened taxi times. This positively affects taxiway safety, reduces fuel burn and associated fuel costs.
